Cards Rally to Take Two from Maryville

The William Jewell baseball team swept a double header from Maryville University on Saturday afternoon at Jack Talley Stadium by scores of 5-4 and 6-4. The Cardinals are now 16-17 overall and 9-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

GAME ONE | Cardinals 5 - Maryville 4
Jewell took game one in walk off fashion as Brendan Carney ripped the first pitch from Maryville reliever Sam Danker up the middle for a two RBI single to score Chase Fiddler and Nate Pecota and win the opener 5-4.

The Saints got on the board first with two runs in the top of the second before Jewell responded with a run in the bottom of the frame as Dylan Christie scored on a sac fly off the bat of Tyler Carpenter. In the fourth inning Drew Standifer advanced to third on a fly ball and scored on a throwing error to tie the game at two.

Maryville scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to regain the lead 4-2 before the Cardinals mounted a late rally. Down to their final three outs, Christie and Tanner Foerschler posted back-to-back singles followed by Pecota reaching on an error to set up Carney's big moment.

The Cardinals were out hit 7-5 with Christie having two. Zach Saalfeld also posted a double while Carney (2), Pecota, and Carpenter each recorded at least one RBI. Eric Smith (2-1) earned his second win of the season after throwing one-third of an inning, allowing just one walk while striking out one. Smith was on in relief of starter Mack Stephenson (3-0) who went 6.2 innings of work, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out five.

GAME TWO | Cardinals 6 - Maryville 4
The nightcap did not end in a walk off but was not without drama as the Saints were held off in the ninth inning by Garrison Fields who struck out the side to strand the bases loaded and quash the Maryville rally.

Jewell jumped out on top early with two runs on two pitches in the opening frame. Drew Standifer took the first pitch from Louis Niemerg to right center field for a triple followed by Garrett McKinzie taking the first pitch he saw over the center field wall to put the Cardinals up 2-0. Jewell added a run in the third inning as Standifer again saw just one pitch and ripped his seventh triple of the season before coming around to score on a Maryville error.

The Saints pulled within a run, scoring two in the top of the fourth on three consecutive doubles. Jewell extended the lead back to three in the sixth frame as Carpenter scored on a wild pitch before Saalfeld roped a single through the right side to score Pecota.

Maryville made things interesting in the eighth as Mitch Carringer pulled the Saints within 5-4 on a two run home run, before Fields recorded two strikeouts to end the frame. In the bottom of the inning, McKinzie doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch to add an insurance run and push the Cardinal lead to the final of 6-4.

The Jewell bats came alive in the nightcap, out hitting the Saints 13-8, led by three from Standifer, while McKinzie posted three RBI.

Brendan Beatty (4-5) earned his fourth win of the season on the hill, tossing seven innings, allowing just two earned runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out six. Fields, who came on in relief in the eighth inning, tossed two complete innings, striking out a career high five batters.
