Baseball Swept By S&T in GLVC Doubleheader

The William Jewell College baseball team dropped both ends of its Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) doubleheader with Missouri S&T, 10-9 and 10-6, in Rolla, Mo., on Monday afternoon.

In game one, Jewell (17-21, 10-10 GLVC) appeared to be in complete control after scoring seven runs in the first inning highlighted by a lead-off homerun from Drew Standifer.

S&T chipped away at Jewell's lead scoring four runs in the third and two in the fourth and trailed the Cards 9-7 heading into the final inning.

After two quick outs, Cardinal hurler Garrison Fields walked two straight batters before giving up a two-run triple that tied the game at 9. Zach Wiegand came into the game as a pinch hitter and delivered a single to left field for the game one walk-off win.

The Cardinals finished the game with 14 hits, led by Hans Alwin who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Cardinal hurler Mack Stephenson lasted only 3.1 innings giving up 10 hits and six runs while striking out six.  Fields took the loss for Jewell his first of the season.

Game two Jewell jumped out to a 2-0 lead only to see the Miners score seven unanswered runs.  Jewell scored two in the eighth followed by S&T responding back with three in the bottom of the frame.

The Cardinals trailed the Miners 10-4 heading into the final frame.  Garrett McKinzie and Nate Pecota each provided an RBI but that was all the Cards could muster as the Miners closed the door on the afternoon sweep.

Standifer went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead Jewell and Brendan Beatty took the loss, his sixth of the season.

William Jewell will return to the diamond tomorrow as they host Northwest Missouri State in a nine inning game.  First-pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
