The William Jewell College baseball team welcomed the Jets of Newman University to Talley Stadium today for a non-conference matchup. Jewell came back from a three-run deficit to down the Jets 7-6 and improve to 19-24 on the season.
The Cards shot out of the gate and took advantage of three Newman errors in the bottom of the first and led 3-0.
Newman tied the game with three in the top of the third and took the lead 6-3 with two in the top of the fourth and a single run in the top of the sixth.
Chris Chalabi drove home
Zach Saalfeld who led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple to center field and
Brendan Carney scorched a triple to right field two batters later that scored Chalabi and cut the lead to 6-5.
Drew Standifer led off the seventh with a triple to centerfield and
Tanner Foerschler followed up with a single to left to the game 6-6.
Chalabi led off the eighth with a double to left and
Brendan Carney gave the Cardinals 7-6 lead with a single to left.
Garrison Fields who came into the game in relief closed the door in the eighth and ninth to pick up his second win of the season.
Neither starter figured into the decision with the Cardinals using five pitchers and Newman using three. The Jets also outhit the Cardinals 14-11 but also had three costly errors in the game.
Offensively, Carney was 2-for-4 with two RBI's while Foerschler was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Cardinals will return to Great Lakes Valley Conference action this weekend when they host Truman State for a four game series beginning Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
