The William Jewell College baseball team welcomed the Bulldogs of Truman State to Talley Stadium for the beginning of a four game series today in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. The Bulldogs swept the doubleheader taking game one 10-8 and rallied late to take the nightcap 5-2. The Cards fall to 18-22 overall and 10-12 in GLVC play while Truman improves to 16-28 overall and 9-13 in league play.
Game one saw the Cards jump ahead of the Bulldogs when
Garrett McKinzie reached second base off a throwing error from the Truman third baseman.
Tanner Foerschler drove McKinzie home with a two-out single to center to give Jewell an early 1-0 lead.
Truman tied the game in the top of third off a solo homerun from Mason King, his second of the season. The Bulldogs would string together three hits in the top of the fifth that produced two runs and gave Truman a 3-1 lead.
They would add three more runs in the sixth highlighted by a two-run homerun by Jason Priest that put Truman in what seemed to be a commanding 6-1 lead.
The Cardinals came back with a flurry in the bottom of the sixth batting around and scoring 7 runs highlighted by back to back solo homeruns from McKinzie and
Brad Jelinek to start the frame. Foerschler,
Christian Chalabi,
Hans Alwin,
Tyler Carpenter and
Brendan Carney all added RBI's for Jewell in the inning that put Jewell up 8-6.
Truman would answer right back with a two-run homerun from Evan Kayser which tied the game 8-8 in the top of the seventh inning. Priest would add another homer in the top of the eighth to put the Bulldogs up 9-8, the fourth homerun of the game and the Bulldogs would add an insurance run in the top of the ninth to take a 10-8 lead.
Peter Young came in and closed the door on the Cardinals in the bottom of the ninth to earn his sixth save of the season for the Bulldogs.
Alwin and Pecota led the Cards with two hits a piece while the Cardinal pitchers walked six and hit two batters.
Brendan Beatty (4-7) took the loss in relief of
Vijay Patel and gave up eight hits and five runs in his four innings of work. Cardinal pitchers gave up four homeruns in the game to Truman State.
In game two, Carpenter displayed the leather saving at least one run in the top half of the third then delivered an RBI single in the bottom half and Alwin followed with a RBI single of his own to put Jewell up 2-0.
The Cardinals held the Bulldogs scoreless until the top of the sixth when Truman rallied and scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead. All three runs were scored with two outs in the inning.
Truman added two more insurance runs in the seventh to build a 5-2 lead and Young again came in to earn his seventh save of the season.
Chalabi led the Cards with two hits and
Eric Smith (2-3) was the tough luck loser in game two going 5.2 innings giving up 7 hits and 3 runs while striking out three.
The Cardinals will conclude their series with Truman tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
