Cards Drop GLVC Opener to McKendree, 54-28

The William Jewell College football team fell behind early and dropped their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener, 54-28 to McKendree University on Saturday afternoon in Liberty, Mo.  The loss drops the Cardinals to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the GLVC.  McKendree improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.   
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1Q (14:39) The Bearcats scored on the second play of the game when Jalyn Williams hauled in a pass from Reese Metcalf from 29 yards out. 
  • 1Q (8:32) Metcalf rushed in from four yards out to increase McKendree's lead to 14-0.
  • 1Q (6:32) Shayeen Edwards put the Bearcats up 20-0 when he plowed in from two yards out and after the PAT McKendree lead 21-0.
  • 1Q (5:10) Metcalf found Matt Cole from 37 yards out to put the Bearcats up 28-0 after the PAT. 
  • 1Q (4:24) The Bearcats recorded their first of four interceptions on the day and their first of two pick-sixes when Blake Benoist picked off Brad Strauss and ran it back 30 yards for the score.  McKendree lead 35-0 after the first quarter.    
  • 2Q (14:52) The Cards got on the board when Strauss found Ian Burch from 9 yards out and the Cards trailed 35-7. 
  • 2Q (7:47) The Cards seemed to be gaining momentum when Trejuan Mask found a hole and ran it in from 29 yards out to cut the lead to 35-14.
  • 2Q (5:05) McKendree responded on their next drive when Preston Thompson ran it in from 19 yards.
  • 2Q (0:05) Josh Lazaro drilled a 29 yard field goal to give McKendree a 45-14 halftime advantage. 
  • 3Q (14:53) On the first play of the second half Strauss was picked off by Nate Powell who found the endzone from 25 yards away and after the failed PAT the Bearcats led 51-14.
  • 3Q (11:30) Mask scored his second touchdown of the day, a four-yard run, and Jewell trailed 51-21.
  • 3Q (3:43) Lazaro connected once again, this time from 32 yards away to give McKendree a 54-21 lead.
  • 4Q (4:00) Quarterback Will Schneider scored his first career touchdown for the Cardinals that produced the final 54-28 margin. 
     
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
  • Mask led the team in rushing with 60 yards and two touchdowns. 
  • Wyatt Miller hauled in six passes for 32 yards to lead the Cards in receiving. 
  • Quayde Bauman led the defense with 11 tackles. 

 TURNING POINT
  • The Bearcats held the Cards to two three and outs and two turnovers on the Cardinals' first four offensive possessions.   
     
YOU SHOULD NOTE
  • Mask leads the Cardinals in scoring on the season with four touchdowns. 
     
WHAT'S NEXT
Jewell will continue GLVC play when the host Missouri S&T for homecoming next Saturday, September 30, 2017.  Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
