The William Jewell volleyball team took down Truman State 3-1 on Friday evening in the Mabee Center. After dropping the first set the Cardinals came storming back to win the final three and move to 5-10 on the season and 2-4 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- SET ONE: The Cardinals and Bulldogs traded points in the opening set until a 4-0 spurt put Truman on top 24-19 late. The Cards got back-to-back kills from Maddie Wingert to pull within two at 24-22 but a Truman kill ended the rally.
- SET TWO: After dropping the opener, Jewell came out firing on all cylinders in set two as they grabbed a 12-1 lead and never looked back. An error by the Bulldogs gave Jewell the 14 point win at 25-11.
- SET THREE: Jewell again jumped out to any lead but this time Truman responded, pulling within two at 19-17. The Cards got two kills from Grace Miller and an ace from Alix Weigel to put the Bulldogs away 25-19.
- SET FOUR: The finale was a battle as the Cardinals took an 8-2 lead only to see Truman pull within one at 22-21. However, a service error by the Bulldogs and two Jewell kills put the set away 25-22 and gave the Cardinals the 3-1 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Neither team was able to get rolling offensively as the each hit less than .100 on the night.
- The Cardinals used a .244 attack percentage in set three to pull away and take the 2-1 lead.
- Truman State out-blocked Jewell 11-4 but the Cardinals posted a season-high eight service aces.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT:
- Wingert and Stefanie Richterkessing led Jewell with 11 kills a piece as the latter posted a team best .273 attack percentage.
- Olivia Tolberd led four players in double figures with 31 digs. Alix Weigel posted 18, Richterkessing 14, and Kennedy Ruck 11.
- Richterkessing also grabbed four aces which ties her career high.
- Weigel collected a game high 40 assists.
YOU SHOULD NOTE:
- Freshman Tori Vogt collected new career highs with eight kills, 33 attacks, and two digs.
- The win marks Jewell's first victory over Truman State since moving to NCAA II, after having lost the previous six matches.

Jewell returns home on Tuesday, October 3 for a match up with Missouri-St. Louis with first serve set for 7:00 p.m. in the Mabee Center.
