The William Jewell men's basketball team downed Rockhurst University for the second time in eight days with a 80-65 win on Thursday evening in the Mabee Center. The Cardinals move to 14-2 on the season and 4-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The victory also marks career win No. 900 for head coach
Larry Holley.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1st Half: Rockhurst opened the game much like the first meeting between the two teams by jumping out to an early lead. The Hawks led by as many as seven before the Cardinals responded with a 26-8 run to go up 40-29. Keith Hayes led the charge scoring 15 points during the run. Rockhurst used two free throws with one second remaining to make it a 40-31 game at the break.
- 2nd Half: The Cardinals opened the second half slowly as Rockhurst pulled within three at 42-39. A three from Nick Bradley sparked the offense as Jewell pushed their lead back to 14 with just over 12 minutes to play. Each time the Hawks pulled within single digits the Cardinals responded, to finish with a 16 point win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals crashed the offensive boards in the opening half leading to 11 second chance points.
- Jewell once again finished with a shooting percentage above 45 percent, coming in at 46.4 on the night, including hitting 13-of-27 three pointers. Rockhurst managed just a 35.9 percent clip from the floor.
- Free throws proved key down the stretch as Jewell cashed in on 15-of-17 from the stripe.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Hayes led three Cardinals in double-figures with 25 points, to go with four assists, and two steals.
- Pharroh Gordon posted his eighth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 boards, while also grabbing three assists, and two steals.
- Eysan Wiley narrowly missed a double-double of his own with nine points and nine rebounds.
- Byron Harp added 16 points, including going 8-of-9 from the free throw line.
YOU SHOULD NOTE
- The win over Rockhurst gives Holley his 900th career victory to become just the 10th coach in men's college basketball history, at any level, to reach this prestigious milestone.
- After scoring just eight points in the team's first meeting a week ago, Hayes was blistering in the rematch, particularly in the first half, where he scored 20 of his team-high 25 points.
