The No. 25 ranked William Jewell men's basketball overcame a 11 point second half deficit but a last second shot attempt fell short as the Cardinals dropped a 94-92 decision at Lewis University on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops Jewell to 15-4 overall and 5-4 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Byron Harp hit one of two free throws at the 8:36 mark of the opening half, which made the score 19-18 in favor of the Flyers. Over the next three minutes Lewis made a 13-5 run to take a 12 point lead before Patrick Whelan hit back-to-back three point shots to keep things close. Harp hit a three with six seconds remaining in the half to pull Jewell within six at 46-40 at the break.
- Lewis came out with a 7-2 run to push the lead back to 11, which they did not relinquish until late. Back-to-back three pointers from Pharroh Gordon chipped the deficit down to four at 85-81.
- The Flyers maintained the advantage until another three from Gordon, followed by a defensive stop, and a jumper from Whelan put Jewell back on top for the first since the 9:51 mark of the first half. Lewis regained the lead with with five free throws to go up 93-89 with just 17 seconds remaining. Harp then went coast-to-coast for an old fashioned three point play as the Cardinals trailed by just one with 12 seconds to play. Clark Minnifield stole the ensuing inbounds pass to give Jewell an opportunity with just eight seconds to go but a contested jump shot fell just short letting Lewis escape with the 94-92 win.

- The Cardinals scored 20 points off 13 Lewis turnovers.
- The two teams played nearly even in the paint as the Flyers outscored Jewell 28-24.
- The Cardinal bench outscored the Flyer bench 28-17.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Harp paced the Cardinals with a season high 25 points, followed by Whelan with 21. Gordon added 18 and Hayes 17 while each posted two assists.

- Head coach Larry Holley will once again look to tie Bobby Knight for ninth on the all-time wins list, currently sitting at 901 victories.
