The William Jewell women's basketball team gave Great Lakes Valley Conference East leader Lewis all they could hand for three quarters but fell 65-51 on Saturday afternoon in Romeoville, Ill. The loss drops the Cardinals to 8-8 overall and 5-4 in GLVC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1Q: The Cardinals started quickly, jumping out to a six point lead behind three pointers from Rhyann Fisher and Adriana Rodriguez. The lead grew to as many as eight as Natalie Closser hit a layup with one minute remaining in the opening period. A shot from Jessica Kelliher at the buzzer made it a 16-10 Jewell advantage after ten minutes of play.
- 2Q: The Flyers responded in the second quarter and outscored Jewell 17-9 to take a 29-23 halftime lead.
- 3Q: Lewis opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run to push their lead to 36-23 with just under seven minutes remaining in the period. The Cardinals and Lewis played evenly, each scoring 12 points, over the final 6:30 of the frame to bring the score to 48-35.
- 4Q: The Cardinals pulled within eight with under six minutes to play after two free throws from Kayla Harrell but could get no closer as the Flyers outscored Jewell 9-5 over the final minutes.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell hit 45 percent of their field goals in the first half, compared to just 34 percent in the second half.
- The Cardinal bench once again outscored their opponent 22-6 and 28-20 in the paint.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Closser was the only Cardinal in double figures, finishing with 11 on 5-of-7 from the floor.
- Lindsey McCoy pulled down a career high 12 rebounds.
