Fast Start Not Enough as Cardinals Fall at Lewis

The William Jewell women's basketball team gave Great Lakes Valley Conference East leader Lewis all they could hand for three quarters but fell 65-51 on Saturday afternoon in Romeoville, Ill. The loss drops the Cardinals to 8-8 overall and 5-4 in GLVC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1Q: The Cardinals started quickly, jumping out to a six point lead behind three pointers from Rhyann Fisher and Adriana Rodriguez. The lead grew to as many as eight as Natalie Closser hit a layup with one minute remaining in the opening period. A shot from Jessica Kelliher at the buzzer made it a 16-10 Jewell advantage after ten minutes of play.
  • 2Q: The Flyers responded in the second quarter and outscored Jewell 17-9 to take a 29-23 halftime lead.
  • 3Q: Lewis opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run to push their lead to 36-23 with just under seven minutes remaining in the period. The Cardinals and Lewis played evenly, each scoring 12 points, over the final 6:30 of the frame to bring the score to 48-35.
  • 4Q: The Cardinals pulled within eight with under six minutes to play after two free throws from Kayla Harrell but could get no closer as the Flyers outscored Jewell 9-5 over the final minutes.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell hit 45 percent of their field goals in the first half, compared to just 34 percent in the second half.
  • The Cardinal bench once again outscored their opponent 22-6 and 28-20 in the paint.

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
  • Closser was the only Cardinal in double figures, finishing with 11 on 5-of-7 from the floor.
  • Lindsey McCoy pulled down a career high 12 rebounds.
