The William Jewell volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision at Lewis University but gave the No. 23 ranked Flyers all they could handle, including taking a set for the first time in program history. The Cardinals drop to 8-18 overall and 2-10 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Set One: The Flyers used a 8-4 run early in the opener turn take a six point lead from which the Cardinals could not recover. Jewell pulled within four but a late 7-1 run extended the Flyer lead to 10 and pushed them to the set win, 25-17.
- Set Two: The Cardinals battled point-for-point with Lewis until a 5-1 run put Jewell on top 24-20 late, capped by a kill from Raechel Meisinger. After a timeout, the Flyers scored twice, to pull within two but a kill by Lauren Castaneda sealed the set and tied the match at one.
- Set Three: The Cardinals jumped out to a 12-9 lead early in set three only to see Lewis tie things up at 14. The two teams traded points until late in the sate when the Flyers used a 6-1 run to turn an 18-18 game into a 24-19 lead. Back-to-back Flyer attack errors gave Jewell life and pulled them within three but a Lewis kill ended the set.
- Set Four: Jewell again jumped out to an early advantage in set four, leading by as many as six led by two kills from Meisinger to force a Lewis timeout. The Flyers responded with a 14-5 run to retake the lead 20-17. Kills from Tori Vogt and Elizabeth Quinn, combined with a Lewis error tied the set once again at 20 but the Flyers scored five of the final six points to take the match.
