Cardinals Come Back from Two Sets Down to Defeat Missouri-St. Louis

The William Jewell volleyball team rallied from a two set deficit to defeat Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri. With the win, their third straight, the Cards move to 11-19 overall and 5-11 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Set One: The Cardinals came out slow, falling into a 22-10 hole after five consecutive errors early. A kill from Raechel Meisinger ended the skid but the Tritons scored three of the final five points to take the opener 25-12.
  • Set Two: Tied at eight, UMSL went on a 13-4 run to open a 21-13 advantage. Kills by Meisinger and Grace Baucom pulled Jewell within seven but UMSL's Kylie Rudsinski sealed the set 25-17.
  • Set Three: The Cardinals took advantage of early errors by the Tritons in set three to open a 19-15 lead. UMSL rallied to take a 23-22 lead but kills by Jenna Rau, Lacey Albers, and another Triton error pushed the Cards over the hump at 25-23 and extended the match.
  • Set Four: In set four, the Cardinals again opened a big lead as a Rau kill put Jewell on top 17-11, but UMSL did not go quietly tying the set at 21. The home team helped out the Cardinals with three errors combined with a Paityn Hardison kill to win 25-23 and force the fifth and deciding set.
  • Set Five: For the third straight set, the Cardinals jumped out to an early lead only the see the Tritons climb right back. Jewell used three kills from Hardison top open an 11-8 lead in the finale but UMSL responded and eventually held match point, 14-13. Hardison answered with a kill, followed by a Kennedy Ruckh ace to flip the script and give Jewell match point. The block of Hardison and Meghan Tauke shut the door and gave Jewell the comeback victory, 16-14.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals allowed UMSL an attack percentage above .300 in each of the first two sets but followed by not allowing the Tritons better than a .170 clip.
  • Jewell led the way with six service aces to just one by UMSL.
