Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cardinals Drop Opening Game of GLVC-GLIAC Challenge

The William Jewell men's basketball team played host in the second edition of the GLVC-GLIAC Challenge. The Cardinals dropped their first game on Friday evening to Davenport University by a final score of 92-85 to fall to 0-3 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st Half: A left-handed floater from Byron Harp gave Jewell the early lead five minutes into the game. Midway through the first half, jumpers from Eysan Wiley and Keith Hayes moved the Cardinal lead to four points. As the Davenport offense started to get hot it was Mason Alexander and Hayes coming up big from beyond the arch to keep the Cardinals on to to put Jewell on top 43-39 at the half.
  • 2nd Half: Two minutes into the half, a three-point basket from the Panthers made it a one point Davenport advantage but Jewell responded with two made free throws from Nick Bradley and a deep three pointer from Clark Minnifield to regain the lead. Jackson Golightly kept the offense rolling with back-to-back baskets to make it a three-point Jewell lead. With nine minutes left in the game the Cardinal offense went cold from the field and Panthers responded with a strong finish and at one time found itself with a 12-point lead. Jewell pulled within six with under a minute to play but the Panthers connected on enough free throws to keep the Cardinals at bay.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals shot 44 percent from the floor compared to Davenport's 50 percent.
  • Jewell went 10-for-14 from the charity stripe while Davenport was 18- for-28.
  • The Cardinals were able to put 20 points on the board off of Panther turnovers.
