Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Shooting Woes Doom Cardinals in Loss at Quincy

The William Jewell women's basketball team suffered through the coldest shooting of the season on Thursday in a 58-49 loss at Quincy. The Cardinals drop to 3-3 on the season and 0-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st Quarter: The Cardinals started strong with consecutive threes from Antoinette Mussorici but Quincy closed the opening quarter on an 11-4 to hold an 16-12 lead after 10 minutes.
  • 2nd Quarter: The second frame was dismal for both teams as they combined for just 12 total points. Natalie Closser's layup at the 7:56 mark was Jewell's only field goal of the period but the Cards stayed in the game, trailing just 22-18 at the break.
  • 3rd Quarter: Jewell got off to a good start in the second half after a three from Sydney Offield just 48 seconds in, followed by another layup by Closser to give Jewell their first lead since the opening quarter at 25-24. From there the Hawks went on a 18-5 to take a 42-30 lead into the final quarter.
  • 4th Quarter: The Cardinals made things interesting down the stretch as a bucket by Kayla Harrell followed a Mussorici three pulled Jewell within 49-41 with just over two minutes remaining. Unfortunately for Jewell, it seemed each time the Cards got within striking distance Quincy converted on the other end including hitting seven free throws in the final 60 seconds to secure the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • After Quincy committed just nine turnovers of the first 30 minutes, Jewell forced the Hawkins into nine in the fourth quarter alone.
  • The Cardinals owned the paint, outscoring Quincy 18-12.
  • Jewell shot a season-low 25 percent from the field but did connect on 11-of-12 free throws.

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
  • Scoring: Harrell (11), Mussorici (11)
  • Rebounding: Offield (9)
  • Steals: Kiara Bradley (3)
  • Blocks: Bradley (2)
