Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Last Second Shot Pushes Truman Past Cardinals, 73-72

The William Jewell men's basketball team nearly secured their first conference win of the season but Truman hit a three with just two seconds remaining to win 73-72 and drop the Cardinals to 2-8 on the season and 0-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st Half: The Cardinals fell behind early, 10-4 but responded with a 9-0 run, capped by a layup from John Ekwomadu to take a 13-10 lead. Truman took a five-point lead with under four minutes to play in the opening half but a three point-point play by Nick Bradley and two baskets from Keith Hayes pulled Jewell within two at the intermission, 40-38.
  • 2nd Half: After tying the game three times early in the second half, the Cardinals trailed for nearly 10 minutes before Hayes and Jackson Golightly combined to score eight consecutive points to put Jewell on top 69-65. Byron Harp stepped to the free throw line and put Jewell on top by two with just six seconds on the clock but Truman's Taurin Hughes went the length of the court and nailed a three from the top of the key to put the Bulldogs ahead by one.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals were much improved on offense, shooting nearly 44 percent from the floor, including 50 percent in the first half.
  • Jewell forced 14 turnovers which led to 20 points.
  • Truman won the battle on the boards, 42-30.
