The William Jewell men's basketball team used a big second half run to down Southern Indiana 94-81 on Thursday night in the Mabee Center. The win moves the Cardinals to 19-6 overall and 9-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while the Eagles, who came into the game ranked fifth in the latest NCAA II Midwest Region poll, drop to 19-8 and 10-5 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1Q: The Cardinals started fast, jumping out to a 12-6 lead behind two three pointers from Patrick Whelan. The Screaming Eagles responded with a 16-3 run to take a 22-15 lead with 11:31 remaining in the first half. Over the next nine minutes the Cardinals outscored USI 23-8 behind nine points from Pharroh Gordon. USI cut the lead to three with under a minute to play in the opening half but two free throws by Emil Ostafiiciuc made it a 42-37 Cardinal advantage at the break.
- 2Q: The Eagles opened the second half hot with a 7-0 run to retake the lead, 44-42. Over the next eight minutes, six different Jewell players scored during a 27-7 run to give the Cardinals their biggest lead of the night at 69-51. The two teams traded buckets for much of the final ten minutes but the Jewell lead was enough to cruise to the 13 point win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals forced Southern Indiana into 10 turnovers, leading to 12 points.
- Jewell's bench outscored the Eagles 17-14.
- The Cards won the battle on the boards 37-35, and pulled nine offensive rebounds, including five from Ostafiiciuc.
- Jewell committed just eight turnovers on the night, the second lowest total this season.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Gordon led the Cardinals with a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds for his third consecutive double-double and his 12th this season. The junior also added five assists and two steals.
- Whelan poured 21 points and four assists, on 7-of-18 from the floor.
- Keith Hayes posted 14 points while Eysan Wiley chipped in ten.
- Ostafiiciuc pulled down a season high 10 rebounds.
YOU SHOULD NOTE
- After struggling from the three point line over the past four games, Jewell hit 13 threes at a 41 percent clip against USI.
- Tonight's win, combined with losses by top teams, bumped the Cardinals into eighth place in the GLVC point rating system, which will decide the eight seeds for the postseason tournament March 1-3.
