Cold Shooting Sends Cards to Loss to UIndy

The William Jewell men's basketball team suffered through one of the coldest shooting nights of the season on Saturday in a 90-79 loss to Indianapolis. Jewell falls to 19-7 overall and 8-7 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell started hot on the offensive end connecting on the first five shots of the game, only to have Indianapolis matching them point for point for much of the first half. With 7:30 remaining in the opening half of play, Pharroh Gordon and Eysan Wiley combined for seven consecutive points to give Jewell an 11 point advantage, 34-23. The Greyhounds cut into the deficit and the Cards went to the locker room leading 38-31 at the break.
  • Jewell opened the second half with back-to-back threes from Patrick Whelan and Keith Hayes but the Greyhounds responded with seven points of their own to trail by just three. A traditional three point play from Gordon pushed the Jewell lead back to seven with 14:28 to play before the tides turned against the Cardinals. UIndy outscored Jewell 21-12 over the next 12 minutes to rally and take a commanding nine point lead with just over two minutes on the clock and connected on 14-of-16 free throws to keep the Cardinals at bay.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals won the battle in the paint 34-26.
  • The Cards connected on just 22 percent from behind the three point line, which is the lowest of the season, and 35 percent of total field goals, the second lowest this season.

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
  • Hayes lead the Cardinals with 25 points while adding three assists.
  • Gordon posted another double-double of 17 points and 17 rebounds.
  • Whelan added 14 points and Byron Harp 12 to put four Cardinals in double figures.

YOU SHOULD NOTE
  • Gordon's 17 point-17 rebound performance is his fourth consecutive double-double and 12th overall this season. The redshirt junior has posted 63 rebounds over the past four games for an average of 15.8 per night.
