Defense Leads Cards to Key GLVC Win Over Truman State

The William Jewell women's basketball team earned a key Great Lakes Valley Conference win over Truman State University, 52-49 on Thursday evening in the Mabee Center. With the win, the Cards move to 11-9 overall and 8-5 in the GLVC. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1Q: After Jewell opened the game with a 5-0 lead, Truman went on a 11-2 run to close the quarter leading 11-7. Both teams struggled offensively in the opening period shooting less than 28 percent. 
  • 2Q: Truman extended their lead to seven (16-9) less than two minutes into the second quarter before the Cardinals went on a run. Kaiti Butaud's three from the top of the key with 3:55 remaining in the half gave Jewell their first since the early minutes at 20-19. The Bulldogs retook the lead with just over a minute to play but a layup from Lindsey McCoy with 36 seconds on the clock put the Cards on top 27-26 at the break. 
  • 3Q: With Truman leading 32-31 Natalie Closser worked her way through the paint for a layup to give Jewell a lead they never relinquished as they led 37-33 at the end of the third period. 
  • 4Q: A three from Adriana Rodriguez to open the final quarter gave Jewell a big momentum push and a 40-33 advantage. After a layup from Closser gave te Cards their biggest lead of the night at 50-42, the Bulldogs made things interesting outscoring Jewell 7-0 over the next 3:35 to pull within 50-49. McCoy hit two free throws with three seconds remaining to secure the 52-49 win. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals owned the paint, outscoring Truman 32-18. 
  • After the Bulldogs opened the game with three early three pointers, Jewell held the them to just 23 percent shooting clip from behind the arc for the game and 32 percent from the floor overall.
  • The two teams battled to an even rebounding mark at 33 each. 

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT 
  • Closser posted a career high 15 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, to go along with four rebounds and two steals. 
  • McCoy put in her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 boards, while adding a block. 
  • Katie Finn led Jewell with four assists, while Sydney Offield added three in her first action since January 15. 

YOU SHOULD NOTE
  • The win over Truman moves Jewell to 7-1 in the Mabee Center this season.
