The William Jewell baseball team dropped a non-conference contest 12-10, at Northwest Missouri State on Wednesday afternoon in Maryville, Missouri. The Cardinals trailed by as many as seven before mounting a late rally but ultimately fell to 6-8 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- B1: The Bearcats opened the scoring early with three runs on three hits and an error to take a quick lead. (3-0, NWMO)
- T4: The Cardinals got on the board in the fourth as Ben Pautler lead off the frame with a solo home run, his first of the season, to pull Jewell within two. (3-1, NWMO)
- B4: Northwest Missouri broke the game open with five runs in the fourth on four hits and and a Cardinal miscue. (8-1 NWMO)
- T5: The Cardinals got a run back in the fifth as Luke Viestenz singled to lead off the frame and scored on a single from Nate Pecota. (8-2, NWMO)
- T6: The Jewell bats finally got rolling in the sixth inning scoring five runs on five hits. A walk to Christian Chalabi followed by a single from Trent Bollman put two on for Chase Redick who sent a double down the left field line to score both runners. Viestenz traded places with Redick on a double of his own before scoring on a single from Tyler Carpenter. Brendan Carney also sent a single through the right side to score Carpenter and pull the Cardinals within one. (8-7, NWMO)
- B6: The Bearcats got pushed their lead back to three, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth. (10-7, NWMO)
- T7: The Cardinals tied the game in the seventh as Redick roped a two RBI triple to right field before scoring on an RBI groundout by Viestenz. (10-10)
- B7: Northwest Missouri took advantage of three walks in the bottom of the frame to tack on two runs and go back on top by two. (12-10, NWMO)

Winning Pitcher: Jimmy McElwain (1-0) earned the win, allowing just one earned run over 1.1 innings of work.
Losing Pitcher:
Eric Smith (0-2) suffered the loss with two earned runs on four hits in nearly three innings.
Save: Trevor Dudar (6) tossed one scoreless inning to earn the save.
