Cardinals Split Home Opener with Southwest Baptist

The William Jewell softball team opened the home portion of the 2018 season on Friday afternoon by hosting Southwest Baptist for a double header at the Spratt Sports Complex. The Cardinals dropped the opener 3-0 before earning a 8-0 run-rule victory in game two. Jewell improves to 8-2 on the season with the split.  

GAME 1
FINAL: 3-0, Loss

HOW IT HAPPENED
T5: Southwest Baptist jumped on top first scoring two runs on three hits and an error in the fifth frame. (2-0, SBU)
T6: The Bearcats strung together three singles to add a run in the sixth. (3-0, SBU)

PITCHERS
WINNING PITCHER: Claire Miller (2-6) Tossed a two hit shutout with eight strikeouts and two walks
LOSING PITCHER: Anna Biondo (4-1) Gave up two earned runs on nine hits while striking out seven batters

GAME 2
FINAL: 8-0, Win (5 Inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
B1: Anna Biondo singled up the middle and came around to score on two wild pitches. (1-0, Jewell)
B3: The Cardinals posted six runs in the third frame on RBI doubles from Biondo and Courtney Beatty followed by Sarah Lewis' first home run of the season. (7-0, Jewell)
B5: With two runners in scoring position Biondo lined out to left field but the ball was far enough to allow Madelynne Greenstreet to cross the plate and end the game in run-rule fashion. (8-0, Jewell)

PITCHERS
WINNING PITCHER: Madelynne Greenstreet (3-1) Tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits while striking out four
LOSING PITCHER: Hunter Middleton (2-2) Allowed six earned runs on five hits

The Cardinals continue non-conference action on Saturday afternoon as they host Central Missouri at 1 p.m. Jewell topped the Jennies 5-0 back on February 18.
