Viestenz's 13th Inning Hit Gives Cardinals a Sweep of Truman

The William Jewell baseball team withstood multiple Truman State rallies to sweep a double header on Sunday afternoon and take three of four in the series. The Cardinals move to 11-9 on the season and 3-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. 

GAME 1 
Final: 4-3, Win

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B1: Jewell jumped on top early with four runs in the first inning on RBI by Christian Chalabi, Trent Bollman, Tyler Carpenter and Luke Viestenz. (4-0, Jewell)
  • T4: Truman got on the board with a run on two hits in the fourth frame. (4-1, Jewell)
  • T7: The Bulldogs rallied with two in the seventh to pull within a run but a fielder's choice stranded the tying run at third base. (4-3, Jewell)

PITCHERS
Winning Pitcher: Mack Stephenson (2-1) earned his second win of the season going five innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out four. 
Losing Pitcher: Rian Markes (1-2) took the loss, giving up four early runs, while only one was earned.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • T1: Truman took an early lead with a run on two hits in the opening half inning. (1-0, Truman)
  • B1: The Cardinals wasted no time in regaining the advantage, putting up a five spot in the bottom of the frame on RBI from Carpenter, Chase Averitt, and Brendan Carney. (5-1, Jewell)
  • T5: The Bulldogs scored a single run on one hit and two errors to pull within three of the Cards. (5-2, Jewell)
  • B5: Jewell responded by scoring two runs on three hits as Pecota reached on an infield single and scored on a hit by Carpenter. Viestenz followed with a sac fly to score Chalabi and make it a five run game. (7-2, Jewell)
  • T6: With two outs in the sixth Brendan Tremble singled through the left side to score two for the Bulldogs. (7-4, Jewell)
  • B6: The Cardinals got the two runs back and more in the bottom of the inning as Pautler scored on a RBI single from Chalabi. Averitt doubled down the right field line to score two more before crossing the plate himself on a single from Viestenz.
  • T9: Truman got one hit and took advantage of multiple Jewell errors to rally with seven runs to tie the game in the ninth. (11-11)
  • T13: Korey Carter doubled to lead off the 12th for Truman and scored on a Cardinal error to put the Bulldogs on top but a strikeout by Kylan Easley stranded the bases loaded and prevented further damage. (12-11, Truman)
  • B13: Chase Redick led off the bottom of the 13th with a double down the right field line followed by Austin Kline reaching on a hit by pitch. Bollman dropped the sacrifice bunt to advance Redick and, pinch runner Chase Fiddler, into scoring position. Viestenz ended the game, taking the first pitch he saw up the middle for a two-RBI walk off single. (13-12, Jewell)  

PITCHERS
Winning Pitcher: Easley (1-1) earned his first win as a Cardinal, working 4.1 innings and giving up just hits and no earned runs.  
Losing Pitcher: Tanner Forck (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing the two earned runs in the 13th frame.
