Box Score 2 The William Jewell baseball team split the first two games of a four-game set with Missouri-St. Louis on Friday, taking the opener 6-1 before dropping the nightcap 9-8 in extra innings. The Cardinals move to 12-10 on the season and 4-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
GAME 1
Final: 6-1, Win
HOW IT HAPPENED
- B2: UMSL took an early lead, scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the second on two hits. (1-0, UMSL)
- T3: The Cardinals responded in the top of the third, taking advantage of four free passes from the Tritons. Christian Chalabi drew a bases loaded walk to put Jewell on the board followed by a fielder's choice from Chase Redick scoring Ben Pautler to give the Cardinals their first lead. (2-1, Jewell)
- T4: Jewell added two runs on a one hit in the fourth as Brendan Carney walked and came around to score on a double off the bat of Pautler, who later scored on a passed ball. (4-1, Jewell)
- T5: Two singles and a walk loaded the bases once again and allowed Chalabi to score on a sacrifice fly from Luke Viestenz to extend the lead. (5-1, Jewell)
- T6: The Cards pushed the lead to the final as Carney walked and scored on a sac fly from Redick. (6-1, Jewell)

Winning Pitcher:
Brendan Beatty (4-1) tossed a gem, going the distance and allowing just six hits and no earned runs while striking out six.
Losing Pitcher: Alex Oltmann (1-3) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits and four walks in 4.1 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- T1: The first five Jewell hitters reached base to grab an early two run lead before an out was recorded. A double play, passed ball, and another single allowed three more Cardinals to cross the plate and make it a five run lead after a half inning. (5-0, Jewell)
- B2: UMSL wasted little time responding, scoring six runs on three hits in the second frame to take their first lead of the day. (6-5, UMSL)
- T3: Jewell got one run back and tied the game as Tyler Murphy roped a triple to right field and scored on a single up the middle by Carney. (6-6)
- T4: Nate Pecota led off the fourth inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch to put the Cardinals back on top after four frames. (7-6, Jewell)
- B5: The Tritons got a two run home run in the fifth inning regain the lead by one in the fifth. (8-7, UMSL)
- T6: Redick counted her a home run of his own to tie the game at eight. (8-8)
- B8: With a runner in scoring position UMSL got a walk off hit to left field to grab the win. (9-8, UMSL)

Winning Pitcher: Matt Graser (3-2) earned the win, throwing eight innings in relief, giving up three earned runs on nine hits.
Losing Pitcher:
Reed Pegram (2-1) suffered his first loss, allowing just one hit and an earned run.
