Cardinals Blast Season High Four Home Runs in Win at Fort Hays

After totaling just five home runs through the first 25 games of the season, the William Jewell baseball team blasted four at Fort Hays State in an 18-11 win over the Tigers on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Cardinals move to 14-12 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B1: Fort Hays got on the board first with four runs on three hits and two Cardinal errors in the opening frame.. (4-0, FHSU)
  • T2: Jewell got a run back in the top of the second as Tyler Carpenter doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a single to right field by Brendan Carney. (4-1, FHSU)
  • B2: The Tigers got a triple and a home run in to add two runs to the board and push their lead to five. (6-1, FHSU)
  • B3: Another two run home run gave Fort Hays a seven run cushion in the third frame. (8-1, FHSU)
  • T4: The Cardinals got one run back as Trent Bollman doubled and scored on a two out single up the middle off the bat of Nick Gavin. (8-2, FHSU)
  • T5: Ben Pautler blasted his third home run of the season, and second in as many days to lead off the fifth inning and pull the Cardinals within five. (8-3, FHSU)
  • B5: Fort Hays countered with a two run shot of their own in the bottom of the frame and pushed the Jewell deficit back to seven. (10-3, FHSU)
  • T6: The Cardinal offense got moving in the sixth frame scoring four runs on three hits. With two runners on, Jewell got back-to-back two out hits, including a three run home run from Nate Pecota to make it a three run game. (10-7, FHSU)
  • T7: Jewell completed the comeback in seventh, getting a three-run home run from Gavin, the first of his career. (10-10) 
  • T8: Christian Chalabi got in on the action in the eighth with a two run shot to left center to give Jewell their first lead of the day. Gavin added to his RBI total with a bases loaded walk to score Carpenter and push the lead to three. (13-10, Jewell)
  • T9: The Cardinals added some insurance in the final frame, scoring five runs on five hits and a Tiger error. Carpenter, Gavin, and Robbie Colburn all posted RBI in the inning. (18-10, Jewell)
  • B9: The Tigers scored a single run in the bottom of the ninth on a solo home run but could get no closer. (18-11, Jewell)

PITCHERS
Winning Pitcher: Thomas Hennelly (1-0) earned his first win of the season, working three innings and allowing just one hit while striking out three. 
Losing Pitcher: Sam Capps (2-3) took the loss, giving up three earned runs on two hits and three walks.

The Cardinals return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend as they take on Missouri S&T on Sunday and Monday in Bolivar, Mo., in games adjusted due to weather concerns.
