Tolberd Gets 2,000th Dig as Cardinals Fall

The William Jewell volleyball team fell 3-0 to McKendree University in the 2018 home opener on Friday night to drop to 2-10 on the season and 0-4 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The big bright spot on the evening was senior libero Olivia Tolberd who recorded a game-high 17 digs, the tenth of which was the 2,000th of her career, making her just the second player in program history to reach such a milestone.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Set One: The Cardinals started strong, matching McKendree point for point in the early going of set one. The Bearcats went on a 14-6run to take a late 23-15 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Maddie Wingert and Jenna Rau made it a 23-17 game but a McKendree kill and an ace gave the Bearcats the opener.
  • Set Two: Both teams went back-and-forth in set two, with neither able to grab more than a three point lead. With the Cardinals leading 22-21, McKendree was able to string together four consecutive points to take the set 25-22.
  • Set Three: Jewell fell behind early, 6-1 but battled back to knot things up at 14 behind two kills each from Grace Baucom and Paityn Hardison. Later, three consecutive errors pushed the Bearcats to a 20-17 lead that the Cards couldn't recover from, falling 25-22.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals hit .112 on the night with 35 kills while the Bearcats posted a .215 attack percentage.
  • Jewell posted three aces while McKendree had two.
