Jewell Splits Rockhurst Triangular

The William Jewell volleyball team downed Arkansas Monticello 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in Kansas City to split the Rockhurst Triangular. The Cardinals, who fell to the host Hawks 3-0 earlier in the day move to 3-12 on the season and 0-6 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. 

GAME ONE - Rockhurst University (14-25, 12-25, 12-25)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Set One: The Cardinals fell into an early 7-2 hole and could not recover, falling 25-14 in the opening set. 
  • Set Two: Jewell battled early, but a late 11-2 run by the Hawks gave Rockhurst a two set lead. 
  • Set Three: The Cards held tough early in the final set but four consecutive errors put Rockhurst on top by eight on their way to the 25-12 win. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals managed just 26 kills on an .079 attack percentage, compared to a .390 clip by the Hawks.

GAME TWO - Arkansas Monticello (24-26, 25-20, 25-10, 23-25, 15-13)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Set One: With the scored tied at 11, the Cardinals went on a 8-3 run to take a late lead. UAM battled back, scoring 12 of the final 19 points to take the opening set. 
  • Set Two: Tied at 11 again, Jewell used a short 5-0 run to separate themselves and took advantage of seven errors by the Blossoms to take the set 25-20. 
  • Set Three: The Cards used kills from Maddie Wingert, Raechel Meisinger, and Lily Johnson to build an early 13-6 lead in set three. Jewell closed the set on a 7-0 run, led by three kills from senior Jenna Rau to take win in dominating fashion, 25-10. 
  • Set Four: Set four was a back-and-forth affair with the Cards grabbing a late 22-21 lead only to see the Blossoms win four of the final five points to force the fifth an deciding set. 
  • Set Five: Trailing 11-9, the Cardinals got two kills from Paityn Hardison, along with one each from Johnson and Rau to push Jewell over the hump and win the finale in comeback fashion, 15-13. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals posted a .214 attack percentage, the second highest of the season, with 66 kills, while holding UAM to a .161 mark. 
  • Jewell posted six service aces while committing just two receiving errors. 

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
YOU SHOULD NOTE
  • Rau's 16 kills opposite Arkansas Monticello matches her career high, which she previously posted in October 2015. 
  • Tolberd is closing in on the William Jewell career digs mark, needing just 53 to break the record. 

UP NEXT
Jewell returns to the Mabee Center on Tuesday for the first of six consecutive home games, as they host Central Missouri at 7 p.m.
