The William Jewell College football team put a scare into the No. 1 ranked and defending NCAA Division II National Champions Texas A&M Commerce Lions in Jewell's 2018 season opener on Saturday afternoon at Greene Stadium. The Cardinals fell behind early but regrouped to fall by a final score of 27-17.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1Q (8:54) The Lions scored first with a 1-yard touchdown run from Kane Wilson and Commerce led 7-0 after the extra point.
- 1Q (3:21) Carandal Hall rushed in from three yards out to put the Lions up 14-0.
- 2Q (8:06) Texas A&M appeared to be running away with the game when Marquis Wimberly hauled in a 10-yard pass from Preston Wheeler and the Lions led 21-0.
- 2Q (2:41) The Cardinals used a bit of luck to get on the scoreboard when Bulla Graft caught a 35 yard touchdown off a deflection from a Lion defender and Jewell trailed 21-7.
- 2Q (00:13) The Lions scored right before halftime on a 30-yard field goal and led 24-7.
- 3Q (7:38) Dalton Dye nailed his first field goal of the season for Jewell from 28 yards out and the Cards trailed 24-10.
- 3Q (2:44) The Lions would score their final points of the game with a 29 yard field goal and led 27-10.
- 4Q (8:58) Jewell Quarterback Will Schneider scrambled in from eight yards out to produce the final margin of 27-17.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Schneider led Jewell in rushing with 96 yards and a score. He was also 17-of-31 for 160 yards and a touchdown.
- Graft had six catches for 73 yards and a touchdown.
