The William Jewell men's basketball team squared off against No. 1 Bellarmine University in Thursday night's Great Lakes Valley matchup. The Cardinals stayed within striking distance during the first half, but the top-ranked Knights gained control after the break to earn the 85-65 victory. The loss drops Jewell to 8-10 overall and 2-4 in GLVC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1st Half: Belarmine was able to jump to an early 6-0 lead in the game but it was Nick Bradley putting Jewell on the board with a three-point basket from the corner. Keith Hayes followed suit with another shot from beyond the arch before the Knights offense got hot extended its lead to double-digits with eight minutes left in the opening half. Mason Alexander responded with another three-pointer to bring the score to 19-24 in favor of Bellarmine. Eysan Wiley and Byron Harp added in baskets of their own to send Jewell into the locker room down just 34-40.
- 2nd Half: The No. 1 Knights offense kept things rolling in the second half and at one point were able to find a 26 point lead. Robbie Hanson and Garret Skipworth were able to finish the game strong for the Cardinals with baskets of their own to bring the score to the final of 85-65.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals shot were able to score 16 points off of turnovers, compared to 20 points from Bellarmine.
- Jewell was out-rebounded 33-24.
- The Cardinals shot 62 percent from the charity stripe.
