Byron Harp nailed three free throws with just 1.9 seconds on the clock to lift the William Jewell men's basketball team to their first Great Lakes Valley Conference victory of the season, an 81-80 win over Drury University. With the win, the Cardinals win their fifth in a row to move to 7-8 overall and 1-2 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1st Half: Jewell opened the game with a quick 9-2 lead but the Panthers came storming back to go on top 29-16 with just under 10 minutes to play n the opening period. Nick Bradley led a 13-4 run for the Cardinals to tie things up at 29 before Keith Hayes scored 11 points over the final 5:43 to put the Cardinals on top 43-40 at the break.
- 2nd Half: The Cardinals outscored Drury 16-7 in the first five minutes of the second half to open up their largest lead of the game at 59-47. The Panthers slowly cut into the Jewell lead before tying the game at 76 with just under two and half minutes to play. Drury's Allen Billinger hit a three with 41 seconds to go to put Drury on top, followed by making one-of-two free throws 24 seconds later to extend the lead to two. With just 1.9 ticks on the clock, Harp double clutched his three-point shot to draw a foul and go to the line where he nailed all three shots to seal the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell shot 42 percent from the field and hit 11-of-30 three point attempts while Drury shot 46 percent overall.
- The Cardinals took advantage of opportunities at the foul line connecting on 26-of-36 for 72 percent while Panthers finished at just 57 percent.
