The William Jewell football team scored 16 points over the final 15:20 of regulation but came up two points short, falling 30-32 at Southwest Baptist. The loss drops Jewell to 1-5 overall and 0-4 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
How it Happened
- Southwest Baptist jumped out to an early lead, after forcing a fumble, Brenden Smith rushed one yard into the end zone. The point after attempt was blocked.
- The Cardinals responded immediately using 11 plays to travel 72 yards ending with a 26 yard run from Brad Dee for his first career touchdown to put Jewell on top 7-6.
- Jewell extended their lead on the following drive as Donte' Colum grabbed an interception and took it 88 yards to the end zone pushing Jewell to a 14-6 advantage.
- In the second quarter, the Bearcats' Cory Hanger took a punt 75 yards back for a touchdown. SBU added another score after blocking Dalton Dye's next punt to make it a 19-14 lead for the Bearcats.
- With 20 seconds remaining in the third quarter Dee used a three-yard run to pull the Cardinals within 11.
- After another interception from Colum the Cardinals found the end zone on an eight-yard run from Will Schneider, however, the two-point conversion attempt failed.
- Jewell got a bit stop on the ensuing drive that led to a 43-yard field goal from Dye to make it a two-point game.
For the Cardinals
- Schneider finished with 183 yards through the air and 73 on the ground with one score.
- Dee posted a season-best 124 yards rushing with two touchdowns.
- Colum finished with two interceptions for 95 yards with four players leading the team with eight tackles.
For the Bearcats
- Smith led the Bearcats both through the air and on the ground with 146 and 124 yards respectively and four touchdowns.
- The Bearcats forced Jewell into three fumbles.
- Hanger led SBU with 11 tackles and a forced fumble.
