The William Jewell men's basketball team dropped their final game before conference play begins on Tuesday evening falling 75-67 to Emporia State as a part of the MIAA Thanksgiving Classic. The loss drops the Cardinals to 3-3 on the year.
How it Happened
- Jewell came out of the gate hot taking an 8-3 lead after two three pointers from Robbie Hanson and force an early Emporia State timeout. The Hornets followed up with a 18-5 run to grab an 21-13 advantage with under 13 minutes to play in the half. A layup by Carter Olsen put the Cardinals back in front by one late in the half but the Hornets closed the period by outscoring Jewell 17-11 to hold a six point lead at the intermission.
- After trailing by as many as eight in the second half, Jewell cut the lead to just one after a steal and bucket from Nick Bradley with just over three minutes to play but Emporia State connected on all six free throw attempts down the stretch to secure the win.
For the Cardinals
- Hanson led all scorers with a career-high 23 points on, hitting five three pointers for the second time this season, while also grabbing four rebounds and two steals.
- Wiley added a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards while blocking three shots.
- Bradley chipped in 11 points while Jackson Golightly grabbed seven rebounds.
- Jewell forced their opponent into a season-high 19 turnovers and grabbed 12 steals, which led to 22 points.
For the Hornets
- Keyon Thomas and Jumah'Ri Turner each finished with 22 to pace Emporia.
- Brenden VanDyke pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
- Emporia State grabbed 12 offensive rebounds which led to 10 points.
