Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Slow Start Dooms Cardinals in Home Opener

The William Jewell men's basketball team got off to a cold start offensively and could not recover, falling to Rockhurst by a final of 79-48 on Tuesday evening in the Mabee Center. The Cardinals drop to 3-4 on the season and 0-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

How it Happened
  • Rockhurst scored the first six points of the game in just over one minute of play and controlled much of the opening half, leading by as many as 18 in the early going. The Cardinals got a layup from Eysan Wiley and a three-point play from Kobe McKinley to cut the deficit to 15 but the Hawks got a jumper at the buzzer to make it a 43-23 game at the break.
  • A traditional three-point play by Robbie Hanson pulled Jewell back within 17 in the early minutes of the second half but each time the Cardinals looked like they would make a run, Rockhurst responded. A basket by Kevin Truong with just under two minutes on the clock gave the Hawks their biggest lead of the night at 31.

For the Cardinals
  • Wiley led Jewell with 23 points and seven rebounds.
  • As a team the Cardinals shot a season-low 32%, including just 2-of-22 from the three-point line after entering the game averaging more than seven triples per night.
  • Jewell grabbed a season-best 10 offensive rebounds which led to eight points.

For the Hawks
  • On the flip side, Rockhurst shot a nearly 50% on the night and better than 43% from the three point line.
  • Quinton Curry and Curtis Lewis each posted 16 points while Thomas Faber added 13 and Nick Volz 12 and nine boards.

Up Next
Jewell will look to get back on track on Saturday as they host Baptist Bible for a non-conference contest at 3 p.m.
