The William Jewell men's basketball team completed the opening weekend of the season on Saturday as they fell 63-54 to Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
How it Happened
- Both teams started cold as they combined for just 19 points through the first nearly 12 minutes after a bucket by Jackson Golightly. Trailing 16-11 the Cardinals went on a 9-0 run, capped by a layup from Nick Bradley to pull ahead 20-16. The Panthers closed the half on a 6-0 spurt of their own to hold a 22-20 advantage at the break.
- Davenport grew the lead to as many as 19 in the second half before the Cardinals made a rally. 10 points from Golightly helped pull the Cardinals within eight with just over 90 seconds remaining but the Panthers converted three of four free throws down the stretch to keep Jewell at bay.
For the Cardinals
- Golightly finished with 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting while Eysan Wiley added a double-double of 13 points and 12 boards, to go along with four blocks
- As a team Jewell shot 34 percent from the floor but a dismal 17 percent from behind the three point line.
For the Panthers
- Robbie Bramhill led three Panthers in double figures with 18.
- Tafari Beckford finished with 12 rebounds.
