Cardinals Take Series Opener Over Emporia State in Comeback Fashion

Head coach Mike Stockton and the William Jewell baseball team traveled to Andover, Kan. for a nine-inning affair versus Emporia State University on Wednesday. The Cardinals used a seven run eighth inning to spark a comeback victory to improve to 3-1 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B1: Back-to-back walks to start the game put the Hornets on the base paths. Emporia State was then able to capitalize on a crucial Cardinal error and with two outs deliver a grand slam to jump to an early lead. (4-0, ESU)
  • T2: Mason Goade started the Cardinal offense in the second inning with a one out triple to the left field gap. Goade was then plated with a sharp single from Nick Modrcin. (4-1, ESU)
  • B4: Emporia State once again capitalized on a Cardinal fielding mistake and was able to score three more runs on two hits.
  • (7-1, ESU)
  • T8: After being quiet for most of the game, the Cardinal offense came to life in the eighth inning. Nick Gavin brought in the first run of the inning with a fielder's choice RBI. Walks to Goade and Christian Chalabi then plated two more Jewell runs. An opposite field, bases loaded blast from the left-handed freshman Modrcin capped off the inning and put Jewell in front for the first time in the ballgame. The Modrcin homerun is the first of the season for Jewell. (8-7, Jewell)
  • T9: The Cardinals were able to add insurance runs in the final inning when Gavin roped a double down the left field line to bring Anthony Hansen in to score all the way from first base. Gavin was then scored with a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of Austin Kline. Tyler Murphy scampered in to score the third run of the inning with a wild throw on the play from Emporia State. (11-7, Jewell)

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
  • Hits: Modrcin (2), Trent Bollman (2), Hansen (1), Gavin (1), Goade (1)
  • Runs: Gavin (2), Murphy (2), Goade (2)
  • RBI: Modrcin (5), Gavin (2)
