The William Jewell men's basketball could not recover from an early deficit and fell 98-83 to Truman State on Thursday night in the Mabee Center. The Cardinals drop to 9-16 overall and 4-10 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. 


HOW IT HAPPENED

• 1st Half: The offense started slowly on both sides as Truman and the Cardinals combined for just 30 total points in the eight minutes of the game.  After trailing by as many as nine, Jewell got three pointers from Keith Hayes and Byron Harp and pulled within three with under four minutes to play in the opening half. The Bulldogs closed the period on a 14-2 run to hold a 47-35 advantage at the half.  
• 2nd Half: Truman outscored the Cardinals 18-10 through the first seven minutes of the second half to go on top 20. The offense didn't stop for the Bulldogs as they extended their lead by as many as 26 late in the game. Threes by Carter Olsen and Nic Maccioni in the final 90 seconds, pulled Jewell within 15 for the final.

• Jewell shot a solid 48 percent from the floor but couldn't slow down Truman's 60 percent clip.

• With his final bucket of the night, Hayes reached the 1,000 point plateau. He becomes the 43rd member of the Jewell 1,000 point club and just the second to do so with just two seasons as a Cardinal.
