Jewell Baseball Splits Doubleheader at McKendree

The William Jewell baseball split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at McKendree University on Tuesday afternoon, winning 7-4 before falling 6-1 in the nightcap. The Cardinals, who played their fifth game in three days move to 7-9-1 overall and 2-3 in GLVC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • T1: The Cardinals got on the board first with an RBI single by Nick Gavin scoring Chase Redick. (1-0, Jewell)
  • T3: Jewell added to their lead in the third frame as Anthony Hansen and Gavin recorded RBI doubles to score Tyler Murphy and Trent Bollman. (3-0, Jewell)
  • B3: The Bearcats got on the board with a RBI groundout by Adam Cox. (3-1, Jewell)
  • B4: A lead off home run from Drew Reich pulled McKendree within one after four innings. (3-2, Jewell)
  • T5: The first two Cardinals reached base in the fifth before Nick Modrcin greeted a new McKendree pitcher with an RBI double followed by a sac fly from Mason Goade to push the Jewell back to three. (5-2, Jewell)
  • B5: The Bearcats scored on another RBI groundout this time from Matt Klosterman to make it a two-run game. (5-3, Jewell)
  • T6: Hansen and Gavin continued their solid opening game with two more RBI to extend the lead to four. (7-3, Jewell)
  • B6: A sacrifice fly from Cox added a run for McKendree in the sixth frame. (7-4, Jewell)

  • Win: Jack Nielsen (1-0) earned his first career win with a five hit effort over 4.2 innings of work with three strikeouts. 
  • Loss: Geoff Withers (0-2) took the loss going three innings, allowing three earned runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • T1: For the second time in three days Tyler Murphy blasted a lead off home run to put Jewell on top early. (1-0, Jewell)
  • B4: The Bearcats took their first lead of the day on a two-run home run by Andrew Aydt. (2-1, MCK)
  • B6: McKendree got three home runs in the sixth frame to extend their lead to five. (6-1, MCK)

ON THE MOUND
  • Win: Connor Gilles (1-1) earned the win going five innings with six strikeouts.
  • Loss: Shane Cavallo (0-2) suffered the loss also working five frames and allowing three earned runs. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals continue GLVC action this weekend as they travel to St. Louis, Mo. to take on Maryville University.
