Maryville Sweeps Cardinals

The William Jewell baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep on the road at Maryville University on Saturday afternoon falling 13-2 and 13-6 to drop to 7-11-1 overall and 2-5 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. 

GAME ONE

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B3: The Saints drew first blood in the opener with an RBI single by Drake Lubin in the third. (1-0, MU)
  • T4: Jewell immediately responded as Anthony Hansen led off the fourth with a single and scored on a fielder's choice. Trenton Worley singled to left driving in Christian Chalabi who had walked to give the Cardinals the lead. (2-1, Jewell)
  • B4: Maryville came right back with two runs of their own to retake the lead. (3-2, MU)
  • B5: The Saints used a triple and a Cardinal error to add two runs and push the lead to three. (5-2, MU)
  • B7: Maryville scored eight runs on four hits and two errors in the seventh frame to bring the score to the final . (13-2, MU)

  • Hits: Worley (2)

ON THE MOUND
  • Win: Louis Niemerg (1-1) earned the win going seven strong innings, allowing just two earned runs and five hits. 
  • Loss: Reed Pegram (1-4) suffered the loss, giving up 10 hits while striking out five.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B1: Maryville jumped out on top early with a single run on a sac fly by Niemerg in the first. (1-0, MU)
  • B2: A double down the left field ling and a fielder's choice pushed the Maryville lead to three. (3-0, MU)
  • T3: Trent Bollman, Chalabi, and Modrcin posted three consecutive RBI singles with two outs to tie the game in the third (3-3)
  • B3: The Saints came right back, scoring two runs without a hit in the bottom of the frame. (5-3, MU)
  • B4: Maryville pushed the lead to three with a solo home run by Cody Klotz. (6-3, MU)
  • T5: Modrcin came through again with an RBI single through the right side scoring Bollman, followed by a pinch-hit RBI single off the bat of Nick Gavin to bring Jewell within one. (6-5, MU)
  • B5: The Saints got a single through the left side of the infield in the fifth frame to get one run back. (7-5, MU)
  • T6: Tyler Murphy led off the sixth inning with a single and scored on a sac fly by Hansen to again bring the Cardinals back within one. (7-6, MU)
  • B6: Maryville pushed their lead back to four in the sixth on two hits and two errors. (10-6, MU)
  • B7: A two-run home run by Derek Renner made it a six-run margin after seven. (12-6, MU)
  • B8: The Saints tacked on one more in the eighth on a sac fly by Renner. (13-6, MU)

  • Win: Cody Creed (2-3) got the win despite giving up five earned runs on eight hits over four innings of work. 
  • Loss: Mack Stephenson (2-1) suffered his loss of the season allowing four earns runs on three hits.

The Cardinals and Saints wrap up the three-game series on Sunday with a single nine-inning game beginning at 12 p.m.
