Baseball Wins Twelve Inning Battle to Sweep Truman

The William Jewell baseball team survived a 12-inning battle at Truman State winning 9-7 after taking game one of the doubleheader 8-7 to sweep the Bulldogs on the road. The Cardinals move to 9-12-1 overall and 4-6 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • T1: The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in the opening game of the day on four consecutive RBI singles by Christian Chalabi, Nick Gavin, Nick Modrcin, and Austin Kline. (4-0, Jewell) 
  • T2: Jewell added to their lead in the following inning as as the Cardinals got RBI hits from Chalabi, Gavin, and Trent Bollman along with a fielder's choice from Modrcin. (8-0, Jewell)
  • B4: Truman's offense came alive in the fourth frame as they scored five runs on four hits. (8-5, Jewell) 
  • B5: The Bulldogs made things interesting as they tacked on two more runs on a RBI walk and sac fly to pull within one of the Cardinals. (8-7)

ON THE MOUND
  • Win: Garrison Fields (2-1) earned the win, going just a third of an inning but recording a strikeout.

  • Save: Tyler Murphy (2) earned his second save of the season, tossing the final 4.2 innings and allowing just a single hit. 

GAME TWO - 12 Innings

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B2: Truman took the early lead in the nightcap with three runs on four hits in the second inning. (3-0, TSU)
  • T4: The Cardinals got two runs back on a Chalabi home run in the top of the fourth. (3-2, TSU)
  • T6: Anthony Hansen got a one out single in the sixth, and swiped second before scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game. (3-3)
  • T8: Jewell took a late lead as a sac fly from Bollman, and a single by Chalabi, combined with a Truman error allowed three Cardinals to cross the plate. (6-3, Jewell)
  • B9: Down to their final out, Truman came got an RBI single and double to plate three and tie the game at six. (6-6)
  • T12: Tyler Murphy singled up the middle to lead off the 12th inning followed by walks to Hansen and Kline to load them up for Nick Gavin who came through with a bases clearing double to put Jewell back on top. (9-6, Jewell)

ON THE MOUND
  • Win: Ben Muscatello earned his first career win going five innings in relief, and striking out eight. 
  • Loss: Jack Albright (0-1) took the loss allowing three earned runs over two innings. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals are set to take on Southern Indiana over the weekend for a three game series. Originally scheduled to be played at home, Jewell will now travel to Evansville, Ind. due to field conditions. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday followed by a single game Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
