Hennelly's Complete Game Shutout Leads Cardinals to Split with No. 6 Quincy

The William Jewell baseball team shutout the top team in the Great Lakes Valley Conference on their way to a split in the final two games of a three game series with No. 6 ranked Quincy. The Cardinals dropped the opener 3-1 before taking the nightcap 6-0 to move to 10-18-1 overall and 4-11 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • T4: Quincy got on the board first as Jacob Kalusniak roped a bases-clearing double to right field, scoring three. (3-0, QU)
  • B4: Anthony Hansen was hit by a pitch in the fourth and scored on an error by the Hawk second baseman. (3-1, QU)

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
ON THE MOUND
  • Win: Nick Stroud (3-2) went eight innings, allowing just one unearned run with six strikeouts. 
  • Loss: Mack Stephenson (2-3) took the loss, despite a solid three hit, six strikeout performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B1: The Cardinals jumped out on top for the first time in the series in the nightcap with three runs in the opening frame. Four consecutive base hits from Tyler Murphy, Redick, Hansen, and Bollman plated two, followed by a sac fly from Nick Modrcin. (3-0, Jewell) 
  • B5: In the fifth, Hansen was again hit by a pitch and came around to score on a double from Bollman. (4-0, Jewell)
  • B7: Back-to-back sac flys from Hansen and Bollman extended the Cardinal lead to the final. (6-0, Jewell)

  • Hits: Redick (3), Murphy (2), Bollman (2)
  • Runs: Murphy (2), Redick (2), Hansen (2)

ON THE MOUND
  • Win: Thomas Hennelly (2-1) tossed his first career complete game and shutout the No. 6 ranked Hawks, giving up just two hits and striking out a career-best seven. 
  • Loss: Aaron Stone (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season, going six innings, giving up five earned on eight hits.

Jewell returns to GLVC action quickly as they take on Rockhurst in a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 12 p.m. at Talley Stadium.
