Ninth Inning Rally Falls Just Short in Loss to Newman

The William Jewell baseball team used a late inning rally to pull within one of Newman University but fell just short, dropping the non-conference tilt 7-6 on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B1: Jewell got things started quickly as Tyler Murphy drew a leadoff walk before scoring on an RBI single off the bat of Nick Gavin. (1-0, Jewell)
  • B2: The Cardinals extended their lead in the second frame as Logan Becker tripled and scored on a throwing error by the Newman catcher. (2-0, Jewell)
  • T3: The Jets responded with a five-spot in the third inning, taking advantage of two Cardinal errors. (5-2, NU)
  • T5: Newman got a single from Rupnik to plate another and extend their lead to six. (6-2, NU)
  • T7: A two out sac fly by Mitchell Austin added another tally for the Jets in the seventh. (7-2, NU)
  • B7: The Cardinals got one run back in the bottom of the frame as Anthony Hansen singled to advance Murphy to third base before an error by the Jets allowed the senior to cross the plate. (7-3, NU)
  • B9: Down to their final at bat, the Cardinals battled, loading the bases on three free passes. Chase Fiddler put a single in the hole  to plate the first run of the inning followed by a sac fly off the bat of Mason Goade. Trent Bollman made it a one run game with a single through the left side but the tying run was left on base. (7-6, NU)
