Cardinals Rally to Take Series Finale Over Lewis

The William Jewell baseball team recorded two comebacks in the rubber game of a three-game set with Lewis University to down the Flyers 7-6 and win the series. The Cardinals improve to 17-24-1 overall and 11-16 in conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B1: The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead as Tyler Murphy tripled down the right field line and scored on a sac fly to center off the bat of Anthony Hansen. (1-0, Jewell)
  • B2: Another sac fly, this time from Mason Goade plated another run for Jewell. (2-0, Jewell)
  • T4: The Flyers cut the lead in half on an infield single from Matt Verdun. (2-1, Jewell)
  • B5: Hansen again came through in the fifth with an RBI single to left to score Chase Redick. (3-1, Jewell)
  • B6: Back-to-back base hits from Trent Bollman and Chase Fiddler added another for the Cardinals in the sixth frame. (4-1, Jewell)
  • T7: The Lewis bats got going in the seventh as they scored four runs on three hits to take the lead. (5-4, LU)
  • B7: The Cardinals immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning as Redick reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a three bag base hit by Hansen to tie the game at five. (5-5)
  • T8: The back-and-forth affair continued into the eighth when Lewis retook the lead on a double from Brandon Post. (6-5, LU)
  • B8: The Cardinals took advantage of Lewis miscues to plate two runs and go back on top. Bollman and Fiddler reached base setting the stage for Mason Goade and Zac Vorst who posted back-to-back squeeze bunts. (7-6, Jewell)

ON THE MOUND
  • Win: Garrison Fields (3-1) earned his third win, going one and one-third innings, allowing a single earned run on two hits. 
  • Loss: Robert Ward (1-2) took the loss, giving up three earned runs on three hits. 
  • Save: Murphy (4) earned the save, tossing the ninth inning and striking out one. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals will welcome Central Missouri on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. for a non-conference match up.
