The William Jewell baseball team pounded out 16 hits and came home from Illinois Springfield with a series win, grabbing game three by a final of 12-11. With the victory, the Cardinals move to 14-19-1 overall and 8-12 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- B1: The Prairie Stars took an early lead in the finale, scoring two on a triple by Chris Mathieu, followed by a RBI bunt by Zach Speaker. (3-0, UIS)
- T3: Jewell tied the game in the third as Tyler Murphy blasted his team-leading fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot to tie the game. (3-3)
- B3: UIS immediately responded and went back in front with an RBI double. (4-3, UIS)
- T5: Four consecutive singles to lead off the fifth plated a run to tie the game. Nick Modrcin recorded another single to score Chase Redick to give Jewell their first lead. (5-4, Jewell)
- T6: Nick Gavin sent a bases clearing to right field to push the Jewell lead to four. (8-4, Jewell)
- B6: The Stars got an RBI single from Ben Schanding to cut the advantage to three. (8-5, Jewell)
- T7: Back-to-back doubles in the seventh plated three more runs for the Cardinals. (11-5, Jewell)
- B7: A two run home run from Ruben Markham pulled the Stars within four after seven frames. (11-7, Jewell)
- T8: Nick Gavin sent his fourth home run of the season over the left field wall to make it a five-run Cardinal lead. (12-7, Jewell)
- B9: UIS put together a rally in the bottom of the ninth, getting two home runs to pull within a single run before Murphy struck out Schanding to secure the win. (12-11, Jewell)
