West Texas A&M Outlasts Cardinals, 49-21

It was a tale of two halves on Saturday afternoon as the William Jewell football team dropped their week two matchup with West Texas A&M by a final of 49-21. The Cardinals were superb in the opening half but West Texas came out of the break and scored 35 unanswered to push Jewell to 1-1 on the year.

How it Happened
  • For the second straight week Jewell jumped out to an early lead as they marched down field using 13 plays over six minutes. After a rush for loss, Will Schneider found TJ Guillory for 27 yards and forced a West Texas timeout. Then from the three yard line, Schneider trotted into the end zone to give Jewell the lead.
  • Tobias Harris took the ensuing kick off 90 yards for a score for West Texas to quickly tie the game at seven.
  • The Cardinals responded quickly on the following drive as Schneider passed for 62 yards on the drive, including a 19-yard touchdown connection with Ishmial Mitchell to allow Jewell to retake the lead, 14-7.
  • The back-and-forth affair continued as the Buffs marched 79 yards down field and scored on a one-yard rush by Maxwell Perez.
  • Nick Allsman put together back-to-back carries for a combined 34 yards to help the Cardinals drive once again. Schneider leaned into the end zone from one yard out to give the Cardinals a 21-14 lead at the break.
  • The Buffs scored 35 unanswered points in the second half to secure the win.

For the Cardinals
  • Jewell collected 27 first downs, compared to just 21 by the Buffs.
  • The Cardinals collected 444 total yards of offense and held West Texas to 368.
  • Through the air, Schneider went 21-for-39 for 271 yards and one touchdown.
  • Brad Dee led the ground game with 60 net yards on 16 carries.
  • Mitchell posted 108 yards and a score on six receptions. Guillory added a career-high 99 yards.
  • Brock Geisz again led the Jewell defense with 11 tackles. Antonio Wabanimkee also grabbed a 15-yard interception.

For the Buffs
  • Duke Carter IV led the Buffs with 103 net yards rushing on 17 carries.
  • Frank Honang finished with a team-high 11 tackles, one sack, and a forced fumble.
  • West Texas was equally as effective in the air and on the ground with 184 yards each way.
  • The Buffs held the ball for just 19:59 but were six-of-nine on third down attempts
