Cardinals Drop Two on Opening Day

The William Jewell volleyball team dropped both ends of the opening day doubleheader at the Washburn Invitational on Friday. The Cardinals fell to No. 4 Washburn 3-0 followed by Emporia State 3-1. 

GAME ONE

How it Happened
  • The Cardinals started strong, trailing by just one midway through the opening set, led by three kills from Tori Vogt. Washburn took advantage of four miscues by Jewell to pull out to a five point lead and took the set 25-18. 
  • After the Ichabods took an early lead in set two, Jewell battled back behind kills from Vogt, Elizabeth Quinn and Megan Rhule to take a 14-13 lead. Washburn's offense caught fire, scoring six of the next eight points via the kill on their way to a 25-17 win. 
  • Jewell trailed by as many as five in the final set before rallying to tie the set at 20 after an ace from Rhule.  Washburn outlasted the Cardinals 5-3 to win the match.  

For the Cardinals
  • Vogt led the Cardinals with 11 kills while Paityn Hardison added nine. The Cardinals hit .204 as a team on 93 attempts. 
  • Rhule and Harper Auman each finished with double digit assists with 14 and 12 respectively. 

For the Ichabods 
  • Allison Maxwell and Genna Berg each posted 12 kills for Washburn who hit .304 for the match. 
  • Allison Sadler led the Ichabods with 30 assists. 


GAME TWO

How it Happened
  • Jewell and Emporia State battled point-for-point to open the second match of the day before back-to-back kills from Hardison pushed the Cardinals in front by three. Jewell was the recipient of five late errors by the Hornets on their way to a 25-19 win. 
  • Set two was another back-and-forth affair before four consecutive errors by the Cardinals pushed ESU to a four-point lead that they did not relinquish. 
  • Jewell fell into an 11 point hole in set three before falling 25-13. 
  • After leading by five late in set four, the Hornets rallied to go in front and steal the win 25-23.  

For the Cardinals
  • The Cardinals held Emporia to a .193 attack percentage but managed just .148. Wingert led the way with 15 kills. 
  • Hardison collected her first double-double of the year with 11 kills and a team-best 15 digs. 
  • Jewell had eight blocks to Emporia's five, led by Elizabeth Quinn's six.   

For the Hornets 
  • Mikayla Simons led the Hornets with 14 kills, two blocks, and two aces. 
  • Emporia collected five service aces and 63 digs.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday morning as they take on Northwest Missouri State, a team receiving votes in the national polls, at 9 a.m. before wrapping up the weekend with Texas Woman's University at 1:30 p.m.
