Jewell Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to Close Washburn Invitational

The William Jewell volleyball team rallied to force five sets against Texas Woman's University on Saturday afternoon but dropped the final match of the Washburn Invitational. 

GAME ONE

How it Happened
  • The Cardinals fell into a late six point hole from which they could not recover in set one. Jewell hit just .147 compared to the Bearcats' .341 clip. 
  • Neither team could find a rhythm offensively in set two, combining for just 18 kills. 
  • The Cardinals held point-for-point with Northwest Missouri, who is receiving votes in the national polls, until late in the set, as the Bearcats went on a 7-2 run, led by three straight kills from Rachel Sturdevant to take a five point advantage. The Cardinals got as close as 22-18 after a kill from Megan Rhule but dropped the final set 25-19. 

For the Cardinals
  • Grace Baucom led the offense with nine kills while Rhule chipped in 12 assists. 
  • Both Kennedy Ruckh and Tori Vogt dug up 10 balls. 

For the Bearcats
  • Hallie Sidney posted 14 kills and three service aces to lead Northwest Missouri State. 
  • Maddy Ahrens dished out a game-high 40 assists and posted nine digs.

How it Happened
  • With the opening set tied at 11 the Cardinals went on a tear, scoring six of the next eigh points, led by two kills from Vogt. Jewell rolled the rest of the way as Vogt and Elizabeth Quinn added two more kills a piece. 
  • The script was flipped in set two as the Cards managed just six total kills, four from Vogt, and fell 25-9. 
  • Set three was a tighter affair as Jewell pulled within one at 23-22 before three straight errors dropped the set. 
  • With their backs against the wall, the Cardinals rallied to win set four. With the score tied at 14 Jewell posted two blocks and and three kills to go in front 23-17. 
  • The finale was a battle that was won by TWU late. Knotted at 10 each, the Pioneers won five of the final six points. 

For the Cardinals
  • Vogt posted 14 kills on 39 attempts to lead the Cardinals. 
  • Rhule and Harper Auman each handed out 19 assists while Ruckh picked up 17 digs. 

For the Pioneers
  • Tabitha Spray and Courtney Noel each had 13 kills and four blocks for TWU while Trixie Oche added 11 kills 
  • Bailey French put up a game-high 22 digs. 
  • The Pioneers hit .315 with 68 kills on 146 attempts. 

Notable 
• Senior setter Megan Rhule surpassed the 1,000 assist mark for her career in the weekend finale.
