Defense Shines as Cardinals Win First Season Opener Since 2014

The Chuck Lliteras era got off to a solid start on Saturday night as the William Jewell football team secured a convincing 29-9 win over Southwest Baptist in non-conference action. This is the first win for the Cardinals in week one since 2014, which also came over SBU. The defense stole the show with multiple red zone stands, two blocked kicks, two fumbles, three sacks, and interception.

How It Happened
  • The Cardinals took advantage of some early penalties by SBU to march down the field on six plays to put Dalton Dye in position to hit a 44-yard field goal and give Jewell their first lead of the season, 3-0.
  • In the second quarter, Will Schneider connected with Ishmial Mitchell for a 24-yard score. Jewell did not get the extra point conversion but did lead 9-0 at the break.
  • Jewell extended their lead as newcomer Jalik Jaggwe scored the first touchdown of his Cardinal career with a 39-yard reception. The Cardinals used just 1:46 to travel 61 yards and push their advantage to 15-0.
  • Southwest Baptist got on the board when a botched two-point conversion attempt resulted in a 98-yard interception return.
  • Rye'll Dydell got in on the action in the third quarter as well with a 14-yard reception to put Jewell on top by 20.
  • Jaggwe made his presence felt once again to start the final frame as he hauled in a 80-yard reception, the longest touchdown pass of Schneider's career, to make it a 22 point Cardinal lead.
  • The Bearcats finally found the end zone in the final three minutes as freshman Justin Wake connected with Curtis Cuillard for an 18-yard touchdown.

For the Cardinals
  • Jewell had 369 yards of total offense compared to 437 by SBU but made the most of their attempts, moving an average of 6.3 yards per play.
  • Redshirt freshman Nick Allsman posted 79 rushing yards in his debut, including 55 in the fourth quarter.
  • Jaggwe collected 119 yards and two scores on just two receptions which is the first 110-plus receiving game for the Cardinals since Trejuan Mask in 2017.
  • Schneider connected on just 11-of-24 passes but did throw four touchdowns, including his career-best 80 yard pass to Jaggwe which is the longest completion for a quarterback since Nick West's 85 yard toss in 2015 against South Dakota Mines.
  • Brock Geisz led the defense with a career-high 16 tackles, including a sack. Jack Gordon, Antonio Wabanimkee, and Gianni D'Arienzo were also in double-digits for the Cardinals.

For the Bearcats
  • Southwest Baptist quarterback Dylan Mountain led the offense with 184 yards passing, along with 29 on the ground.
  • Running back Eric Knight racked up 108 yards rushing.
  • The Bearcats made their way to the red zone on seven different occasions but scored just once.
