The William Jewell men's basketball team suffered a 92-63 loss on the road at Illinois Springfield on Thursday evening. The loss drops the Cardinals to 6-6 on the year and 1-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
How it Happened
- The Cardinals were in control early, 18-11, behind six points from Jackson Golightly. With Jewell leading 24-17, the Prairie Stars went on a run, outscoring the Cards 26-10 over the final eight minutes of the half to hold a 43-34 advantage at the intermission.
- Jewell forced several turnovers and missed shots in the opening minutes of the second half but struggled from the field, connecting on just 2-of-13 field goals as UIS grew their lead 22. John Zimmerman hit four free throws to pull Jewell back within 18 but the Stars scored 15 points over the final four minutes to take the win.
For the Cardinals
- Eysan Wiley scored 17 points to pace the Cardinals while Golightly added 11 and Zimmerman 10.
- The Cardinals shot 34% from the floor but just 30% from behind the arc.
- Jewell pulled down season-best 13 offensive rebounds which led to 14 second chance points.
For the Prairie Stars
- Keymonta Johnson led all players with 23 points while Matt Wendling added 14 and Daniel Soetan 12.
- UIS shot a blistering 60% from the field and 52% from three, connecting on 11-of-21.
- The Stars won the rebounding battle 42-30 and points in the paint 50-30.
