Big Second Half Leads Cardinals to Third Straight Victory

The William Jewell women's basketball team earned their third consecutive Great Lakes Valley Conference win on Thursday evening as they defeated new league foe Southwest Baptist 83-64. The win improves the Cardinals to 11-12 overall and 7-8 in conference action. 

How it Happened
  • Southwest Baptist jumped out to an early double digit lead after a three by Alexus Johnson made it a 21-10 Bearcat advantage. Jewell got layups from Claire Burch and Ainsley Tolson to pull within seven after one period. 
  • The Cardinals quickly got back into things as they opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run to go on top 24-23. The two teams traded buckets over the final six minutes of the half with the Bearcats leading by two at the break. 
  • Jewell turned things up a notch in the third quarter, outscoring the Bearcats 19-11 and pushing their lead to as many as eight, after a free throw by Kiara Bradley
  • The Cardinals were even better in the fourth, pouring in 31 points as another free throw by Bradley with 14 seconds to play gave Jewell their largest lead of the night at 19. 

For the Cardinals
  • Bradley poured in a game-high 29 points to go along with nine rebounds. 
  • Sydney Offield added 15 and six while Burch finished with 14 and Tolson 13. 
  • The Cardinals grabbed 15 offensive rebounds which lead to 15 points and forced 17 turnovers. 

For the Bearcats
  • Bailey Rezabek led the Bearcats with 22 points and nine rebounds while Johnson and Kyleigh Vaught added 13. 
  • SBU shot 42% from the field and connected on 16-of-17 free throws.

The Cardinals host No. 1 Drury on Saturday in the final home game of the season. Jewell will honor seniors Kelly Hendershot, Kelsi York, Codee Myers and Natalie Denzer after the game.
