Cardinals Sweep Minot State on Opening Day

The William Jewell baseball team opened 2020 with a bang on Tuesday afternoon as they swept Minot State in a doubleheader by scores of 6-4 and 10-8.

Game One
How it Happened
  • Minot State scored first in the opener, plating two runs in the third inning. The Cardinals immediately responded by scoring three in the bottom of the frame on RBI from Ben Pautler and Jade Smoot to take their first lead.
  • The Beavers retook the lead two innings later with two runs but a Pautler sac fly in the bottom half of the fifth tied the score at four.
  • In the bottom of the seventh Anthony Hansen gave Jewell their first win of the year with a walk off two run home run down the right field line.

For the Cardinals
  • Hansen and Christian Chalabi each had two hits, while Hansen and Pautler both had two RBI.
  • Shane Cavallo (1-0) earned the win, working one inning in relief.

Game Two
How it Happened
  • The Cardinals jumped on top quickly in the night cap, as Chalabi and Hansen posted back-to-back hits in the opening inning.
  • Jewell added two more in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the fifth to jump out to a 7-0 lead, taking advantage of three Beaver errors during that stretch.
  • Nick Modrcin and Ryan Dickerson led off the seventh frame with a walk and double and scored on a single up the middle by Chase Swisher to make it 9-0 Jewell.
  • Minot State made a furious rally in the eighth inning, plating eight runs on five hits to pull within one but the Cardinals quickly got an insurance run back after back-to-back doubles from Pautler and Modrcin.

For the Cardinals
  • Chalabi and Modrcin posted three hits a piece to lead Jewell. Modrcin also had three RBI while Pautler scored three runs.
  • Swisher added two hits and two RBI.
  • Junior Alex Schneider (1-0) earned the first win of his Jewell career, working five innings, allowing no runs while striking out four. Nyk Yaquab (1) picked up the save.

For the Beavers
  • Trevaun Smith led the Beavers with three hits and three runs over the doubleheader.
  • Reliever Jaden Hofman (0-1) took the loss in the opener while starter Dominick Parkhurst was saddled with the loss in game two after giving up four earned on four hits.
