Cardinals Drop Two at Northeastern State

The William Jewell baseball team dropped the first two of a four-game series with Northeastern State on Friday afternoon in Tahlequah, Oklahoma by scores of 5-4 and 11-1. The loss drops the Cardinals to 2-2 on the season. 

Game One: 5-4, Northeastern State
How it Happened
  • The Cardinals took an early lead as Anthony Hansen reached on an error in the third to score Mason Goade
  • The RiverHawks tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a single to left field before adding another run on a Cardinal miscue. 
  • Nick Modrcin brought Jewell back to even in the fourth with an RBI single to center, scoring Jade Smoot but NSU quickly retook the lead on a two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning. 
  • Christian Chalabi blasted his first long ball of the season, a two-run shot, in the fifth to tie the game once again but Northeastern State scored on an RBI single in the seventh to take the win, 5-4. 

Game Two: 11-1, Northeastern State
How it Happened
  • The RiverHawks wasted little time in the nightcap, jumping out to a 5-0 lead by the third inning. 
  • Jewell got one back in the fifth on a Chase Swisher RBI single to center but NSU added six more runs over the next three frames earn the 10-run win.
For the Cardinals
  • Chalabi finished with three hits on the day to go along with two RBI. Goade added two hits and two runs. 
  • Shane Cavallo (1-1) took the loss in the opener despite four strikeouts over 2.1 innings. Shane Lang (0-1) suffered the loss in game two, giving up five earned on nine hits. 

For the RiverHawks
  • Chaz Orr led NSU with four hits and three RBI over the doubleheader. 
  • Jonathan Smithey (1-2) earned his first win in game one, striking out 11 batters while Ryan Summers (1-0) got the victory in game two, giving up just a single earned run.

The Cardinals and Northeastern State will wrap up the four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
