Baseball Splits with Northeastern State

The William Jewell baseball team put together a season-best 13 runs on 10 hits on Saturday to down Northeastern State by a final of 13-10 before dropping game two 5-0 to earn the split and move to 3-3 on the season. 

Game One: 13-10, William Jewell
How it Happened
  • The Cardinals started strong with three runs on three hits in the second inning. With the bases loaded, Anthony Hansen was hit by a pitch, followed by Cameron Fliege's double down the right field line. 
  • In the following frame, Ben Pautler walked and stole second before scoring on Cody Lampe's first home run of the season, to left field to push the lead to five. 
  • For the third straight inning the Cardinals put runs across the plate, first on an RBI double by Jade Smoot before Lampe came through again with a grand slam to left field. Christian Chalabi Fliege followed with three more RBI to open up a 13-run Jewell lead. 
  • The RiverHawks scored 10 runs over the final  four innings but Nyk Yaquab came on for the final three outs to shut the door. 

Game Two: 5-0, Northeastern State
How it Happened
  • Northeastern State opened the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning before adding four more runs over the following two innings for a 5-0 lead. 

For the Cardinals
  • Fliege led the Cardinals with four hits and three RBI on the day while Lampe drove in six runs and scored two of his own. 
  • Jack Nielsen (1-0) earned the win in the opener, working 2.1 innings in relief and striking out two. 
  • Garrison Fields (0-1) took the loss in game two, allowing five earned on nine hits with three strikeouts. 

For the RiverHawks
  • Chaz Orr, Reid Fehr, and Collin Klingensmith each finished with three hits over the two games. The latter also drove in four. 
  • The starter, Connor Bell (0-2) was strapped with the loss in game one, giving up four earned on four hits and four walks. 
  • Lee Callison (1-1) got the win in the nightcap, going six strong innings, striking out eight.  

Up Next
The Cardinals are scheduled to return home next weekend for a four-game set with Bemidji State.
