Jewell Rallies to Sweep Bemidji State

The William Jewell baseball team had to come from behind in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader but rallied to sweep Bemidji State 7-1 and 12-8 to move to 6-3 on the season.

Game One
How it Happened
  • After Bemidji State plate one run in the top of the second inning, the Cardinals answered with four in the bottom of the frame. The rally started with Ben Pautler's solo home run to left field, his first of the season. Zach Urso and Christian Chalabi followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to put Jewell on top by three.
  • In the following inning, the Cardinals scored three runs on three hits. With the bases loaded Ryan Dickerson singled through the left side, scoring two followed by Chase Swisher taking home on an attempted steal.

Game Two
How it Happened
  • In the nightcap, Bemidji State came out firing, with three runs on two hits in the opening frame. The Cardinals quickly got one run back as Jade Smoot singled to right center, scoring Anthony Hansen
  • The Beavers added to their lead in the third inning with an RBI double but again Jewell responded with a run on a sac fly by Nick Modrcin to make it 4-2.
  • In the fourth inning Bemidji State regained momentum in a big way with a three run home run by Isaiah Grancorvitz to push their lead to five. However, just like they'd done all day, the Cardinals responded again with two bombs of their own as Mason Goade and Cameron Fliege each hit two-run home runs to pull Jewell back within one, 7-6.
  • After the Beavers got one run back the Cardinals rallied once more, this time for good, scoring five runs on five hits in the fifth inning. The first five batters of the frame reached base with RBI from Code Lampe and and a big two-run single up the middle off the bat of Alex Epp to pull the Cardinals on top. Hansen and Fliege followed with two RBI to give the Cardinals a three-run cushion before Lampe blasted a solo home run in the sixth to bring the score to the final of 12-8.

For the Cardinals
  • Smoot led Jewell with four hits on the day, including two doubles, to go along with three runs and one RBI. Lampe finished 3-for-5 in game two with two RBI, three runs and a stolen base.
  • Thomas Hennelly (1-0) made the early lead stand in the opener, going five innings and allowing just a single earned run on five hits.
  • Garrison Fields (1-1) earned his first win of the season, working 5.1 innings in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two.

For the Beavers
  • Noah Boser led the Beavers with five total hits with while Grancorvitz finished with four RBI.
  • Jackson Back (1-2) took the opening game loss after allowing seven earned runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings of work.
